Hysteric about headache?

Posted by admin on July 3rd, 2008 — Posted in Medical Tips + More

Headaches are one of the most common health grievances of students, adults and even children, Headaches are very common and usually do not point to a serious illness. But even a mild headache can disrupt your daily activities
What actually happens in your body to cause headache?

The skull bones and brain tissues do not have pain sensitive nerve fibers. But muscles of face, mouth, throat, neck, scalp and blood vessels on the surface and base of brain are sensitive to pain as they contain pain sensitive nerve fibers.

The tip of these nerve fibers gets stimulated by various causes like stress, muscle tension, lack of sleep etc. The stimulated nerve tip sends message up the length of the nerve fiber to the related nerve cells of Brain. Brain locates the region of stimulated nerve tip based on these signals and we feel the pain or ache.

The headache may be mild, chronic or severe depending on the underlying cause and pain bearing capacity of the individual.
Our body produces natural pain killing proteins called endorphins. One of the theories suggests that people with low endorphin levels suffer from severe headache and other chronic pains in comparison with people having high endorphin levels.

What triggers headache?

• Anger

• Muscle tension

• Missed meals

• Vigorous exercise

• Sexual excitement

• Infections like Common cold , Flu , Fever , Ear infection ,Tooth infection Sinus infection , Pneumonia , etc

• Coughing - too much coughing can cause a form of traction headache.

• Lifestyle causes Hangover ,Excessive alcohol , Stress , Fatigue , Tension , Tiredness , Excessive smoking

• Dyspepsia

• Eye conditions

• Systemic or metabolic conditions, Hypertension , Thyroid disease ,Anemia , Kidney failure , Uremia

• Brain or head conditions Meningitis ,Encephalitis ,Head injury ,Heatstroke, Sunstroke

• Before, during, or after menstruation

• Hunger

• Medications (Many drugs designed to relieve pain can actually cause headache when the drug is stopped after a period of prolonged use.)

• Alcohol and caffeine withdrawal

• Not getting enough sleep

• Reading for long periods of time or eyestrain

• Doing repetitive work

• Staying in one position for a long time, such as working at a computer.

The same causes of head ache have been explained in Ayurveda also. These causes vitiate all the three doshas (vata, pitta and kapha). The vitiated doshas cause tension, migraine, sinus and other head aches.

Few common types of headache are Tension headache, Migraine headache and sinus headache.

Tension headache: Tightening of muscles of face and neck cause tension headache. It is characterized by a dull ache in forehead or back of head and pain in neck and shoulders which travels to head. Causes like less sleep, stress, reading for a long time, and working in front of a computer for long hours can precipitate tension headache.

Migraine Headache: Migraine headache is caused when blood vessels of head get too much dilated or constricted. Females are more prone to this type of headache than males and migraine tends to run in families.

A person suffering from migraine headache feels like vomiting becomes too sensitive to light, sound and other activities. Few people experience spots or flashes before headache.

Few facts like menstruation in females, caffeine, alcohol, aged cheese, cured meat, stress, change in sleeping pattern, strenuous exercise trigger migraine headache.

Sinus Headaches

A sinus headache surfaces when fluids in the nose are not able to drain well and pressure builds up in sinuses. A cold, dust allergies, dirty or polluted water air travel may cause this type of headache.

Sinus headache causes pain in forehead, cheek bones, nose and stuffy nose. The headache increases when face is bent or touched. The symptoms are worse in the morning.

Although headaches are very common, It is recommended to consult a doctor about your headache. Go to an emergency department if any of the following symptoms occur:

• Pain that develops very rapidly

• A change in concentration or ability to think

• A change in level of alertness

• Altered speech

• Weakness, numbness, or difficulty in walking

• Changes in vision

• Headache with a stiff neck or neck pain, or if light hurts your eyes

• If you feel that this the worst headache of your life

• Headache with dizziness, or a feeling that you are falling to one side

• Headache from an injury or blow to the head

• Headache with fever.

Home remedies for tension headache.

Massage the scalp with slightly warmed sesame oil. This relieves tension headache and induces sleep.

Regular exercise, yoga and meditation reduce the stress levels and keep the tension headache at bay.

Persons of vata type can use hot water bags on aching parts and a hot shower will be of good help.

Persons of pitta type can use cold or ice packs on aching parts and wrap a wet cold cloth around neck.

Home remedies for migraine headache.

Make a note of facts which trigger the headache and also the foods. Try to avoid these . Avoid spicy foods, coffee, tea, alcohol, onion and garlic. Avoid citrus fruits except lemon.

Try muscle relaxation exercises. Progressive muscle relaxation, meditation and yoga are definitely going to help. Relax at least for half an hour everyday by doing your favorite activities like listening to music, gardening, taking hot water bath etc.

Stick to you a regular sleep pattern and get enough sleep but don’t oversleep. Avoid sleeping during the afternoon.

Rest in a dark, quiet room when you feel a headache coming on. Place an ice pack wrapped in a cloth on the back of your neck and apply gentle pressure to painful areas on your scalp.

Home remedies for sinus headache.

Weight Loss Diary 15

Posted by admin on June 15th, 2008 — Posted in Medical Tips + More

From 8 April thru 16 April 2006.

This is the final weight loss diary entry that I will be publishing because although I was still half pound (225 grams) short of my target weight on Friday April 14 I extended this session by another couple of days to make my target. Sunday’s weigh-in saw my weight at 180 pounds (89 kilo’s) the target I set on February 5 when my weight was 198 pounds (98 kilo’s).

At the start of the weight loss program the target was set to lose one pound (450 grams) each week making it an 18-week assignment; it has been achieved in just 10 weeks. During this period no food that I like has been given up for more than one-day at a time and exercise has been set at just 30-minutes each week. (However I must state that as I got into the exercise regime and started enjoying the added fitness it did increase to about an hour each week).

So what was the most successful thing about the program?

A tough question to answer because each part of the program is so important. However if pushed to pick one single thing it must be learning about serving sizes. Ignoring healthy serving sizes is the biggest cause of obesity in the western world.

What did I like most about the program?

That’s an easy question because I liked regaining aerobic fitness above everything else. Not just the formal exercise part of the program but just being more aware of including exercise in my daily life. Stopping delivery of my daily newspaper and walking to buy it each morning. Parking my car as far as possible from the supermarket entrance was great in two ways: First it made me walk a little further to and from the car. Second I rarely had a problem parking the car and it was totally hassle free - a beautiful way to live your life. Then there was refusing to use any escalator if stairs were available. Now I find myself looking for hills to walk up for no other reason than the challenge. This added mobility has another added benefit; I’ve met so many new and interesting people who take regular exercise.

The benefit of losing 18 pounds (9 kilo’s) is good for my health, but even better for my social life is the new people that I’ve met and my rediscovered aerobic fitness. Life is really great.

From emails that I receive I know that some people are following this program with me and some are beating my results while others are not quite on par. The great thing is that even the least successful is still losing one-pound each week and that is the program target. Congratulations. Even if you are 200 pounds overweight it will only take four years at most to achieve your target without giving up anything that you like. The only question you need answer is do I want to lose one-pound (450 grams) each week?

This is the final article of David McCarthy’s weight loss diary because my target weight has been achieved in just 10 weeks rather than the 18 weeks originally forecast. You can see all of his work at www.recipesmania.com/articles.html

Natural Appetite Suppressants Vs. Dangerous Weight Loss Drugs

Posted by admin on May 31st, 2008 — Posted in Medical Tips + More

Sometimes when we become so self-conscious about our physical appearance we would do almost anything to eliminate those unwanted pounds of fat. And sometimes we feel there are only a few choices to choose from.

So what do many slightly and really overweight people do? Many turn to diet drugs without a second thought! The NAAFA website clearly informs the general public of how dangerous most weight loss drugs can be. For example, Phenylpropanolamine which was marketed under different names such as Dexatrim, Accutrim, Dex-a-Diet, and others, causes insomnia, headaches, anxiety, disorientation, fast heartbeat, hallucinations, vomiting, high blood pressure, heart and kidney damage, psychosis, heart attack, and lastly, sudden death! The site goes on to state that such drugs rarely ever produce enduring weight loss results.

At present there are more than 50 new weight loss drugs that are ready to be approved for consumer consumption. There is the case of the amphetamine appetite suppressant. In 1999, in France, this drug was removed from the market on account of causing serious cardiovascular side effects.

Because of the serious side effects of weight loss drugs, more and more people are turning to alternative means for helping them win the battle against unwanted fat and obesity.

If I had a choice, I would first consider a natural “weight loss helper” over a diet drug. Why take unnecessary risks with your health. A safe alternative to weight loss drugs is to exercise regularly on a daily basis, 15-20 minutes, by walking, jogging, or running, or other physical workout; such exercise will help to suppress your appetite. Or you can simply try eating a little less each day in a progressive manner in order to prevent your body from experiencing a shocking reaction. Fasting is always a good idea as an effective measure for losing weight as well as for eliminating many toxins from your body.

If that does not work for you, nor excites you to new heights, there’s a number of safe natural appetite suppressants such as Metabo-Speed XXX, or the much talked about African cactus plant called Hoodia Gordonii. By what I have read so far online about this Hoodia from South Africa, sounds very promising. It’s supposed to naturally remove one’s appetite by making your brain believe that you’re full without having eaten.

You can read reviews and testimonials about this African plant by clicking the link below.

Eat Fiber and Avoid Constipation

Posted by admin on March 20th, 2008 — Posted in Medical Tips + More

To have regular bowel movements and escape constipation you need to eat more fiber. Fiber from raw vegetable and fruits is better for you than fiber from grains. Why? Raw vegetables and fruits are live foods with enzymes, minerals, vitamins, and many antioxidants that are charged electrically. They have a magnetic energy that is absorbed by your DNA. So get more fiber from this source and less from grains.

Don’t forget about water. If you don’t get enough water during the day, your body will take the water out of your fecal matter in the colon and make your stools hard. Drink a minimum of 3 glasses a day of pure water and work up to drinking 5-6.

Here’s where you need to do some “fiber work.” You need to increase your fiber intake to around 40 - 60 mg or more. Yes this is a lot. In the past, I recommended 35mg of fiber, but this is an average. You want to have more than the average amount. Here are some foods with high fiber. Add them to your eating habits so that you will not be constipated. Fiber does much more in your colon than make you regular,it:

* combines with toxins and moves them out in your stools

* combines with heavy metal and moves them out in your stools

* combines with cholesterol and bile and prevents them from being reabsorbed into your blood stream.

* helps to prevent colon cancer and other colon diseases.

* keeps your colon walls strong and healthy by not allowing toxins to accumulate there.

* cleans the colon walls and pulls toxins out of colon pockets and holes.

The following foods provide 3 gm of fiber. Add a variety of these foods to your daily diet to get more fiber into your eating habits. Start eating these foods little by little to get use to eating high fiber levels.

* 1/3 cup prunes

* 2 slices of whole wheat bread

* 1/2 cup cooked winter squash

* 1/2 cup fresh cooked green peas

* 1/2 cup cooked kidney beans, or pinto beans, or cowpeas

* 1 cup of cooked barley, 1 1/2 cup of brown rice, 1 cup of millet

* 3 corn tortillas

* 1 1/2 cup spaghetti, 1/3 cup of spinach spaghetti

* 1/6 cup 100% bran, 1/2 cup cream of wheat

* 1 cup applesauce, 1 cup of apple slices, 1/2 cup of bananas, 1/2 cup figs

* 1 cup fruit salad, 1 cup of prune juice, 1 ounce of raisins

* 1/2 avocado

* 1 cup blueberries, 3/4 cup of cranberries

* 1/3 cup guava, 1 kiwifruit, 1/2 of a mango, 2 nectarines, 1/3 papaya

* 1 orange, 1 cup peach slices, 1 cup pears slices, 1/2 persimmon

* 1 1/2 cup pineapple, 1 cup strawberries

* 1/2 cup raisins, 3/4 cup coconut

* 1/2 cup rhubarb, 1/3 cup of artichoke hearts

* 1.2 ounces of almonds, 1/2 ounce sesame seeds, 1/3 cup of sunflower seeds

* 1/4 cup of baby lima beans, 1/7 cup of black beans, 1 cup green beans

* 1/4 cup of kidney, pinto, white or navy beans, 1/3 cup of lentils

* 1/2 cup broccoli, 1/2 cup Brussels sprouts, 1 cup cabbage

* 2 carrots, 1/2 cup of carrot juice

* 1 cup cauliflower, 5 stalks of celery

* 1 cup of chard, 1 cup of mustard greens

* 1 ear of corn

* 1/2 cup of mixed vegetables

* 1/2 cup of olives

* 1/2 baked potato, 1 baked sweet potato, 1 cup yams

* 1 cup tomato juice, 1 cup vegetable juice

How do you know when you are starting to get plenty of fiber in your diet? When you are getting plenty of fiber in your diet, your stools weigh less and float in your toilet water. So if your stools sink in water then you need more fiber. This is just a general rule. If you eat excess fiber your stools may sink, but I doubt any of you fall in this category.
