“Let me transfer your call.” What goes through your mind when you hear those words? Do you have visions of being placed on hold, waiting for someone else to come on the line, repeating what you just said, and then hearing one more time, “Let me transfer your call?” Feelings of frustration set in and your confidence in the company you dialed begins to diminish. It’s a game of musical phones played to a tune that no one enjoys.

If you don’t like being transferred from person to person over the phone, your customers don’t care for it either. There are a number of ways to transfer callers without creating more problems along the way.

Listen to the caller’s issue. Even if you think you know immediately what people want and who can help them, hear them out. Don’t interrupt. You could learn something that will change your mind about how to handle the call.

Avoid saying the word “transfer.” Tell people that you need to “send” their call to another department or employee. Offer to “connect” them or “put them through” to someone else. Using a different term can save your callers undue anxiety and fellow employees from having to deal with edgy customers.

Check to be sure that the person to whom you are sending the call is actually available. Your customer will not be happy if the call unexpectedly goes through to a voice mailbox. If you know that the person who can help is not in, ask before transferring callers to voice mail. They may prefer another route.

Verify that you have the right person before connecting the call. If you aren’t certain, ask the caller to wait while you check. Tell callers why you need to transfer them.

Give your caller the name and the direct number of the person to whom you are directing the call. That way, if there is a disconnect, your customer knows whom to ask for when they call back. If you have the ability to stay on the line and make an introduction, that is all the better.

If you want to provide customer service that will delight your callers, offer your name and phone number and invite people to call you back if their needs are not met or their questions are not answered. Thoughtfully and carefully transferring calls reflects positively on your entire organization and will eliminate musical phones.

Affiliate Marketing is a concept with it’s own terms. To get started, you’ll have to know what the middlemen and affiliate program pitches mean when they use them, otherwise it will strike you as a bunch of gibberish. For those of you with some experience already in this matter, these terms are for the beginners.

Ad Copy: A written sales pitch, also known simply as ‘copy’. Most follow the AIDA form (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) and examples can be seen on any site that’s selling something.

Affiliate Link: This is how the company knows who to pay. These are the hypertext links given to you by the affiliate program that differentiates you from generic traffic at large. Unless you send someone through an affiliate link, you don’t get paid.

Affiliate Program: An agreement with a given company that has this sort of program to advertise and promote their products in exchange for payment, usually as a commission per sale. You do this at your own expense, although the programs themselves are free to join. I have heard of those that require payment to join, but I strongly recommend against them, as there are plenty of good programs you can join for free.

Commission: This is how you get paid by all affiliate marketing programs. It’s not a salary or a fee, and taxes are not deducted and thus your problem to track. Commissions are usually expressed in percent, although some are given in dollars per sale.

Conversion: The percentage of people you send to an affiliate site that buy. 1% is the industry average. Getting conversions is the name of the game in affiliate marketing.

Creative: The collective reference given by some programs to the sum total of all their advertising stuff, like ad gif’s, testimonials, product photos, and copy text.

Pay Per Click: You get paid anytime someone clicks on a link from your site. The biggest example of a program that does this is Google AdSense, which gives you Pay Per Click ads to put your site and pays you every time someone clicks on it. Miva ARX and Yahoo! also have ad programs that work this way.

Pay Per Lead: This one is not common but very handy. When you send someone to a site and they sign up for a free trial, e-mail list or sales call, it’s called a lead. Some companies pay you to give them leads, which is good for you, because you are getting paid to give a potential customer something for free.

Pay Per Sale: The most common ways to get paid in affiliate programs. When you send someone to a site and they buy a product, eBook, download, or membership, you get paid a percentage of the gross on it.

Super Affiliate: An affiliate marketer in the top 5% of all affilate marketers. These are the ones that make 80% of all the commissions in affiliate marketing and the aspiration of all affiliate marketers looking to get rich doing this.

Two-Tier Program: An affiliate program that pays you for your sales and those of anyone you recruit. For all intents and purposes, if you recruit and train your second tier, they will make you money.

Some programs are also multi-tier, which means you get paid on downline several tiers beneath you or more.

If the idea of pursuing a living on the net has repeatedly crossed your mind but you still haven’t found a way to implement it, then affiliate programs are going to break the ice for you.

Affiliate programs are a lot like learning how to swim in a pool before you go to the open sea. Anyone can try them at least once without having to worry about the consequences.

The good ones are usually safe and do not require a great commitment of time and money from your part. Of course, at this point, some people would argue that this is the exact reason why most people fail. But that’s another issue.

Besides, in many cases, signing up for the right program can be as rewarding as launching your very own enterprise. But above all, it’s a good start.

You see, good affiliate programs are ready to share a wealth of information with you in order to make you successful. They provide resources packed with vital information, give you access to proven online strategies and techniques and teach you how to begin correctly exploiting them. They also save you from making too many mistakes.

Some companies have ongoing seminars that last for months or even longer. The lessons cover all aspects of internet marketing and in your early days as an internet marketer they prove to be part of an invaluable training.

But, in case you’re still wondering what is so great about being an affiliate when there are thousands of them out there, here’s another way to look at things :

1.Each affiliate is unique.

When you sign an agreement with a company to become their affiliate and promote their products you are requested to follow basic guidelines. These primarily deal with things such as privacy, business ethics and general company policy.

Apart from these issues, a company can supply you with resources and business strategies, as mentioned before, but they cannot determine the actions you are going to take in order to promote your business. If, for instance, you want to use a weblog to talk about your product when no one else in your field is doing it, then you are free to do so. You can use any number of options and techniques to make yourself stand out and draw people to your offer. Again, you and only you get to decide which ones.

2. There is no real conflict of interests.

Now, imagine that you decide to create your business in the real world. Let’s say that you’re opening up a store selling mobile phones and other hi-tech stuff made by a well known company.

Yours, of course, is not the only place in town where you can get these items. You are not an exclusive dealer. Just like an affiliate.

But unlike an affiliate, you have to do everything in your power to make people come to your store and buy from you instead of going to another store that sells exactly the same products.

Why? Because, if you don’t make the sale then there’s absolutely nothing in it for you. Not to mention the cost of running a business which in the offline world can be a nightmare.

I am not saying here, that if you are an affiliate for a company you’ll be making money without making any sales. I am just pointing out that there are great affiliate programs that will reward you with a small amount of extra cash generated by other affiliates.

So, there’s really no reason to get upset when other people make sales. This is good for you too. Think about it for a moment, you could actually be helping others making sales and still help yourself growing revenue at the same time.

3. The more affiliates the better for you.

How do you think your competitors would react to your opening up a new store and tightening the competition? Well, they’re not going to be thrilled, that’s for sure! They have a lot to loose and nothing to gain.

But what about you, the affiliate?

Let’s face it. The internet is a huge place. Credibility and trust are hard to come by and a lot harder to build.
