In Limit Texas Holdem, there are no minimum or maximum bets. You can bet the size of the big blind preflop and on the flop, and double that on the turn and river. If you wish to raise someone, you have to raise them by that amount, no more no less. In No limit, the blinds dictate the minimum bet allowed. Oftentimes players avoid making min bets in fear of looking too weak or getting too many callers. Here are a few situations where making the min bet could work to your advantage.
In early position it is hard to play poker aggressively and not let people know you have a big hand. A standard 3x raise from under-the-gun (first person clockwise from the big blind) could scare a lot of players out, but just limping in might allow too many players in. By making a min raise with a variety of hands in early position, you can see a lot more flops by making speculative hands fold and inducing some larger hands to just call. The min raise also let’s you get out of the way from high-action pots that develop after your bet because you’re not invested for much money.
On scary flops. If there is a pretty scary flop, say a big pair or three cards of the same suit, many times making the minimum bet will create doubt among the other players, granted they have not connected with the flop. The min bet, here, looks very strong, like you’re trying to rope players in, and often begets folding.
When the blinds are big. Late in a tournament, when the blinds are large, people tighten up their play and wait for bigger hands. At this point, your min bet is a very large bet in relation to the chip-stacks at the table, even though it is just double the big blind. This creates much the same outcome as a 3x or 4x bet and saves you money when someone comes over the top of you with a raise.
Betting the minimum in a poker tournament can be very deceiving and, if done correctly, can win big pots with a small bet.
